Motivation for VCE

  • by

Coming once I motivate myself to write this 😛

No one stays motivated ALL THE TIME … it is like expecting a camp fire to burn all the time (without adding wood) – it won’t happen. However people can find ways to increase their motivation back to ‘normal’, healthy levels. In other words finding new wood to put into that burning campfire – this way the fire will not extinguish and you do not have to completely ‘re-light’ it. Keeping your motivation level up will have a positive influence in your ENTER score.

So read on, try the exercises and watch your results rise, rise, RISE!

1) Give yourself good enough reasons to succeed (top 8 reasons and write them out);

Normally you find that human beings are not ‘self motivated’ and they burn out rather quickly. Motivation often happens in little ‘packs’ of energy – and then you fall into the vortex of demotivation. One of the biggest problems in VCE is losing motivation and burning out. Since it is a highly stressful time for students, if a student does not have good enough reasons to do well they will not be consistent throughout the year, ultimately this will reflect in the ENTER score.

– Why do you want to do well this year?

Demotivated student;

> “Hmmmm ….**long pause***…. I dunno”
This is often followed by a giggle.

This is a sign that the student will burn out once the workload starts buiding up since they crash, burn and don’t do the work necessary.

> ” Because I want to get a 99 + “

This student is much more ambitious and knows what they want … however they have not answered the question at a deeper level. The question is WHY do you want to do well …. not HOW well you want to do.
If there is no reason to get that 99+ what is going to motivate you?

> ” Because my parents want me to do well”

Parents are no doubt important, however the source of motivation isn’t coming from within (internally) but from the outside world (externally). You have to take intuitive and find out your personal reasons for succeeding. This can still be on your ‘motivation list’ but perhaps not the ONLY reason of success.

Motivated students;

> I want to do well because by getting an enter score of X I will be able to get into course Y. I want to get into course Y because it is compatible to my personality and I am really passionate about studying it.”

This is a way to do the work (in VCE) regardless of whether it is interesting or not. Because you foresee a reward and have something meaningful to work towards. In this case you know that if you do the work – you are taking charge and are doing the right actions to making your future goals realistic.

> “I want to succeed in VCE because it is a way to learn how to self motivate myself and develop skills required to be a successful person in the future. I can use VCE to teach me organisation, managing time, coping with stress and occasionally ‘picking myself up’ from disappointing results”

This is a great reason to do well because it is one in which YOU will benefit fully from. You should use VCE as a mini-life stimulation. In the external world;
– competition exists…not between 17/18 year olds any more!!!!
– you still have to be dedicated
– you still have to pick yourself up from disappointment
– you must be organised
– you will still work

….and trust me stress levels DO NOT decrease. In fact they build up!

Therefore by using VCE to develop personal skills you may finish high school with a high ENTER however most importantly you will be enriched with skills that will benefit you for LONG TERM. In the end the ENTER score will not be talked about much, at university no one really cares what you got. What matters is the life skills you acquire.

> ” I want to do well because I will get a nice car/holiday/present when I get over 90″

Sometimes bribery is the only way someone will get motivated. If you know there is a reward at the end of the journey you will stay focused. Although it works for short term (VCE) it shouldn’t be used at all times – no one in the real world care if you accomplish your goals or not…. it is really up to YOU.

Please be motivated to do this exercise because it will have a positive influence on you!!! 😛

INSTRUCTION:

The more specific you are the better the effect. Keep asking why, why, why until you get to the VERY CORE of the reason why you should do well in VCE. Using this ‘worksheet’ first come up with top 8 reasons why to do well. These reasons will be shallow (surface), go into a deeper level by asking why behind each reason – until you make your reasons so appealing that you cannot resist to open that Maths book 🙂

Once you have reached the core reasons of doing well, make a ‘good copy’ and photocopy heaps of them. Put these up everywhere to be a constant reminder to you about why you are going through the ‘pain’ of VCE 🙂

You should have constant exposure to this because your busy lifestyle will cause you to forget … you can even put it as your computer wall paper so that you will see it and remind yourself the moment you think about logging into Facebook!
